AUPE GSS vs AHS
Interest Arbitration Hearings
Taking place on Feb 16-20
Prior Update from January 19, 2016
On Jan. 14 and 15 your bargaining committee met in Edmonton.
On Jan. 14 we reviewed and prioritized outstanding bargaining issues to prepare for mediation,
which occurred Jan. 15, and interest arbitration, which is scheduled for Feb. 16 to 20.
On Jan. 15 both parties continued to work with Mr. Sims in mediation and signed off an
additional 12 outstanding articles and letters of understanding. Some signed off articles and
letters represent an improvement to your collective agreement. These include:
• Changing special leave to personal leave in the future
• Clearly specifying the amount of travel so extra bereavement can be granted on a
• Clarification on the definition of Union Stewards to reflect the growing training and role of
Stewards in the workplace
Our focus now is on preparing for interest arbitration.
Interest arbitration is similar to most formal legal proceedings. Your bargaining team and
many AUPE staff are now actively writing and finalizing the gathering of all evidence that
will be used to best represent your outstanding priorities.
The actual hearing is expected to take the full four days in February. Given we’ve been
able to significantly narrow the number of outstanding items in dispute, we are hopeful
arbitration will be relatively straight forward and focus on economic evidence and other
settlements achieved with AHS and the broader labour market. We are optimistic an award
can be issued as soon as reasonably possible following the hearings.
